➤ modern — "urban fantasy"-esque in the sense that magic exists. witchcraft is ubiquitous and practiced by lots of people (in secret).
➤ supernatural abilities — telekinesis, precognition, corporikinesis (i.e. manipulating living things i.e. skelekinesis per alex), exist but are extremely rare.
➤ deities (who for the most part act as trickster/fae types) exist in forms that can be bargained with for favors of various sorts. they can only interact with the human world through humans.
➤ the one alex works for (/belongs to), zygcyne, typically shows up to other humans as a fox-type creature. Bigger favors increase the likelihood of monkey's paw shit, and his quid pro quo tends to be doing something innocuous that will be the first step in a butterfly effect sequence.
➤ bargains and communications are made in liminal spaces, they tend to act as portals, so any that are a particular Hot Spot can have highly unsettling Vibes. (really common ones are train stations and hotels)
➤ ghosts and and a version of shades exist.

PERSONALITY

the tl;dr: alex is 60% unresolved and repressed anger issues, 20% caretaker instincts left over from compensating neglect, 10% self-destructive behavior to drown out the emotional pain, and 10% long-term chronic pain in a candy shell. he is the kind of person who acts like an asshole but will show up at 3 am to hide a body or clean your house.

as a child, alex had trouble controlling his power, resulting in him potentially hurting anyone he touched. feeling othered for something out of his control made him quick to anger and lash out via tantrums and destroying inanimate objects. he's still quick to anger, but better at keeping it inside instead of breaking lamps and punching walls. sometimes he just wakes up angry. pinterest says that anger is actually just grief in disguise, and considering all the things that have happened to him worth grieving over, that's accurate. if there's something that upsets him, it's easier to get mad than turn it into a cry.

trying to keep his temper inside also led to him trying to keep everything inside, leaving him very emotionally repressed. letting any big feelings be known, not just anger, is horrifying, because to him it means being perceived as weak. 99% of the time he is putting on a front to protect himself from being perceived. part of it is that to be effective at his job he has to act tough and strong, but then he never actually takes the mask off. if he acts heartless enough, maybe someday he will be and then the world won't hurt so much. (too bad he's not heartless, no matter how hard he tries at that, too.)

because deep inside he is a person with soft feelings who cares deeply about other people, he considers it not only a weakness, but a weakness that will bite him in the ass when he's inevitably abandoned. being given up by his mom has given him a deep fear of abandonment, which has fucked him up in the sense that he hates getting too close to anyone, romantically or platonically, because he thinks they'll find something wrong with him and leave forever. so his friendships and attempts at relationships stay very superficial. he's out there like the goo goo dolls going ~i don't want the world to see me 'cause i don't think that they'd understand~

he also doesn't want anyone to get close to him because despite acting like he has an ego the size of the moon, he has a lot of self-doubt about his worth as a person. alex doesn't think he's actually good at anything besides using his powers to hurt people, (and he doesn't think he's a good person because he enjoys the feeling he gets from doing it too much to stop.) it's been drilled into him by zygcyne that it's his one skill, and if he tried to leave indentured servitude and strike it out on his own, he'd fail. (which is unfortunate because he is a lot more astute than he thinks, especially when it comes to reading out people and social situations.)

overall: he acts like a chill sarcastic asshole 90% of the time. even when he acts mad or annoyed, it takes a lot to actually get him to the edge. only a select few get to see the softer side of sears, but it does in fact exist.

one of his big motivators/"i want" song topics is his obsession with new york and going back to new york. given the opportunity, he won't shut up about how great new york is, acting like phoebe from the magic school bus about her old school. is this an ideal he's built up in his head completely detached from reality? yes. have people like his sister tried to be like "new york is a normal place really and if you move here you will be the same sad you just in a different place?" also yes. has it stopped him from being delusional? nope.

➤ EXTRASENSORY PERCEPTION: he can sense ghosts or otherworldly presences, but not much more than "must be a ghost in here." in short, he's able to walk into otherwise unfelt cold spots. he's gotten better at perceiving them the last few years (which comes with... being more cold...)

➤ PSYCHIC STATIC: as a side-effect of hokey-pokey-ing too hard with the liminal core, he's impervious to mind-reading. anyone who tries is met with physically painful psychic feedback. this doesn't make him impervious to mind control or anything of that nature, he's simply unreadable.

➤ SKELEKINESIS: alex can manipulate the bodies of living things; essentially their physical well-being.
skin-on-skin touch is required.
he can't change or alter something that isn't there, e.g. causing illnesses or anything like shapeshifting.
using his powers comes with a super-intense high, followed by a "hangover" some hours later. this is usually in the form of a debilitating migraine.
he can heal, but it's much harder/energy-consuming (a similar principle to "it's easier to break something than to put it back together"). he also considers healing himself not worth the trade-off (more migraine later) unless it's a critical situation. and if it's a critical situation, focusing is probably going to be hard... 💀

➤ SUBSTANCE TOLERANCE: is this an actual power or a special skill he cultivated all on his own? nobody knows, but he sure can go through pretty much any drug like it's nothing, way past a "normal" overdose point. (he can still get sick, though...)

HISTORY

alex was raised in/around the brighton beach neighborhood of brooklyn (super russian/eastern european, next door to coney island), with two parents and an older sister whomst he hero-worshipped. life was big normal until he was nine and broke a kid's bone on the playground just by touching them. this was the first time his power manifested. his parents didn't really know how to deal with this other than to drill "conceal don't feel" into him and treating him differently without really properly explaining it. feeling unheard and othered frustrated him and, being a child without the vocabulary to voice these feelings, caused a several-year-long period of spitefully destroying objects, breaking windows, punching walls, etc. not knowing how to deal with big feelings lasted until around high school when he found healthier outlets (i.e., hockey.)

when he was 15, his family moved to boston because of his father's job (restorative architecture). he was super unhappy and immediately over it because his entire life was in new york. (also, his older sister had moved out and did not go to boston with them. this was harder than he'd ever admit to anyone shut up!!) roughly a year after they moved, his father died of a brain aneurysm. his mother had a full-on mental break over this. she made a deal with zygcyne to bring his father back to life, with the surprise caveat/monkey's paw of it all being alex doing all the work for it.

he did it, but it took all his energy to the point that he seized out and died for ~4 minutes. (his dad was alive again for about the same amount of time, and alex got to spend all of it in his own hospital room being unconscious and recovering. he doesn't even realize it actually worked? the whole incident is very swiss cheese-looking in his memory.) but what he does remember is his mom not being around or seeming to care while he was the alive person in the hospital. that sure did make it easier for him to go off with zygcyne. (their whole dynamic is very zygcyne claiming that he's alive because of him (untrue) essentially going "i have rescued you from an abusive situation, the abusive situation i've created for you is far superior.")

currently, his "job" is to be debt collector for zygcyne. when people make deals and don't meet their end of the bargain (typically by answering unknown phone calls and texts to perform acts with no further information why), alex gets to track them down and be the creepy thing to threaten them into compliance-- answering the question nobody asked: "what if the hellhounds from cw's supernatural were sexy?" sometimes the threatening goes bad or turns violent. has he killed people? maybe. sometimes. accidentally. like... five people. but it's okay, because he's paid in being a sugar baby and never having to worry about housing or money or anything material, really. see? he's living a non-abusive life where everything is great.

things that are less great: when he used his powers to bring back his dad, he created a rip between himself and the liminal. i.e., he took too much power and almost broke from it. so now, when he uses his power, the energy that comes up tries to drag him back into the core. this... hurts a lot, manifesting in migraines. he's been good at shrugging it off like it's nbd for years on end, but it's getting progressively worse. (this has also had an effect on his ability to feel occurrences and his high tolerance for... everything.) essentially, he gets devastating migraines not long after, and has went down the rabbit hole of trying every legal and illegal drug to kill the pain. but since the migraines are magic-based, drugs only alter his perception of the pain instead of actually treating it. (but by golly if he won't keep trying...)

and that's all how alex is where he is now, and has been for ~12ish years. his mother is basically dead to him, his sister is in new york where he can still love her but be strained about it, and he's stuck in an indentured servant-ish role because of a deal he didn't really have any say in. he wants to go back to new york because of stupid daydreamy reasons, but he's stuck in boston because it's a nexus of supernatural energy/vibes and his narcissist tricker god faux parent said "you can't, because i said so." he has a small circle of friends and tries to fill the void of affection in his life with tindr/grinder hookups, but he's commitment-averse because sometimes you come out of trauma with a deep-seated fear of abandonment. and if anyone knew how bad his migraine issues were getting, they might actually care about his well-being?? and he would be a burden??? get out of here with that noise. why do all that when you could drift through life like a psychic the weeknd song.
